Primal Reflex Release Technique (PRRT)

The PRRT concept was developed by John Iams, PT from San Diego CA. The theory of PRRT is based on the idea that reflexes can become dysfunctional and create a persistent state of pain. Iams describes two reflexes, the Startle and the Withdrawal. The Startle Reflex is seen in situations when you are trying to prevent a fall after you trip. The Withdrawal Reflex is seen when you touch something painful and the body forcefully contracts to remove itself from the painful stimulus. In both of these situations the body undergoes a “tensing” in an attempt to avoid injury. In most cases, after an episode like this the body “relaxes” and returns to normal. However, in a dysfunctional state the muscles stay taut and they restrict motion that leads to neurologically sustained pain.

PRRT uses a palpation examination to identify areas that are being “held” in this tense state. Once identified, the therapist will use a number of painless techniques to release these areas. The therapist can use rapid muscle contractions, quick tapping and sustained positioning. Once the tension is released in one area it allows other areas to release. Once the neuromuscular system is able to function without restrictions the results obtained will last.

The appropriate patient for PRRT is anyone with pain that has not responded to other treatment approaches. The key is when PRRT is indicated, it will have its effect within 2-4 visits. Many times PRRT is the only treatment needed but it also can be integrated with other treatment techniques to obtain the maximal benefit.

Mr. Joey Raines has been personally trained by John Iams, PT at the advanced level programming.

relax aberrant reflexes that produce the muscle spasm forcing immediate reduction of tone to normal levels. This allows the joints influenced by the now relaxed muscle to function optimally increasing its range of motion and easing muscle pain. SCS is an effective but extremely gentle technique because its action for treatment moves the patient’s body away from the painful, restricted directions of motion.

Its value with the acute patient is unmatched because it is so gentle and non traumatic. The clinician is guided by what feels good to the patient and often dramatic changes are made in decreased pain, muscle guarding and swelling. These changes facilitate the patients healing processes for a faster and complete recovery. The gentleness of SCS makes it safe and effective for treating fragile patients (i.e. infants with torticollis, elderly patients with osteoporosis, stress fractures, pregnancy or pelvic pain patients, post operative pain etc…) and the pain associated with excessive joint motion or hypo-mobility. SCS is valuable for the chronic pain patient because it will treat out a longstanding neuromuscular problem reducing the tone of a muscle in spasm. By diminishing the spasm, muscle pain is abated and joint function is normalized.

SCS is a non-traumatic manual therapy technique that can be used on a large population of musculoskeletal pain patients. If you can benefit from this technique look for a clinician who has attended Jones Institute Strain Counterstrain courses.

Mr. Joey Raines is such a clinician.

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a safe, effective and extremely gentle form of stretching and balancing that can eliminate pain, restore mobility and have a profound effect on the body’s tissues at a very deep level. MFR is a holistic “hands on” approach for the evaluation and treatment of the human structure that consistently produces effective and lasting results. By addressing the cause of the problem, restoration of motion and a pain free active lifestyle are achieved.

One of the key features of MFR is that unlike other manual therapies that address either the elastic or muscular component of tissue, MFR addresses the facial component or ground substance (connective tissue). It is the dysfunction of this component (fascia) that is usually the underlying cause of so much of our painful suffering and discomfort.

The expertly trained therapist knows how to palpate for and identify fascial restrictions. Once identified, the therapist proceeds to apply gentle pressures or specialized Myofascial stretches to the affected area and patiently wait for the restrictions to “release” barrier upon barrier until the restriction is completely eliminated. The profound sense of freedom that accompanies the elimination of pain and improved range of motion is what makes MFR stand out.

John F. Barnes, PT is the most internationally recognized authority of Myofascial Release. If you can benefit from this technique look for a therapist that has attended The John F Barnes Myofascial Release Seminars and trained with Mr. Barnes. Mr. Joey Raines is such a therapist.
